Starter prompt

Put in your question and state to run a Claude legal research pass:

Use Firecrawl to research whether employee non-compete agreements can be
enforced in California. Search the Firecrawl Government Index and
CourtListener in Firecrawl Alexandria, and tell me each tool's cost
before running it.

Outline a research memo with:
- The controlling statute, quoted from the official code page, plus URL.
- Five California appellate decisions since 2020 applying it, with case
name, court, filing date and opinion link.
- State guidance or agency pages that cite that statute.

Quote only from returned pages. Tell me plainly if an authority is
missing, and don't describe any case you haven't read.

Before you start

  • Add the connector. From the Firecrawl connector listing, press Connect; Firecrawl opens so you can log in or register at no cost, name the team that pays and confirm. Setup needs no keys or server config, and Firecrawl in Claude has screenshots.
  • Enable it in your chat. Turn Firecrawl on from Connectors in the conversation's + menu.
  • Keep clients out of prompts. The Firecrawl Government Index and CourtListener search public records, so a research prompt never needs a client's name or facts.

In Claude, go to Customize → Connectors, pick Firecrawl, and under Tool permissions set the Read-only tools group to Always allow, so Claude can run lookups without asking each time. Some of those lookups use Firecrawl credits, so keep confirmation on if you'd rather approve each paid call yourself.

Limitations of using Claude for legal research without Firecrawl

In legal work an answer needs an authority you can cite, and that's the point where Claude without sources is weakest.

  1. Authoritative-looking but ungrounded. In Anthropic's words, a quote from Claude can look authoritative without being grounded in fact, and its answers are sometimes wrong or misleading, so the sources it cites need checking (Anthropic). In a brief, that risk becomes a fake citation.
  2. Courts sanction fake cases. A federal judge in New York ordered the lawyers in Mata v. Avianca to pay $5,000 and to send letters to every judge their filing falsely named as an author, after they cited opinions that didn't exist (CourtListener).
  3. Competence means checking. ABA Formal Opinion 512 warns that generative AI can hallucinate, and that relying on it without independent verification could fall short of the duty of competence (ABA).
  4. Recent law may be missing. Claude models have a knowledge cutoff and may not have accurate information about events after it (Anthropic), so a statute amended this year can be stated in its old form.
  5. Confidentiality and disclosure. The ABA says client informed consent is needed before entering representation information into a self-learning AI tool (ABA), and California's 2026 State Bar guidance asks lawyers to check whether their jurisdiction requires them to disclose AI use (State Bar of California).

Where Claude gets court opinions and code sections with Firecrawl

Three pieces sit behind each answer:

  • Firecrawl Alexandria: the legal research backbone here. CourtListener is one of its 100+ licensed providers, and the Firecrawl Government Index sits beside Firecrawl's other indexes for web pages, papers and developer docs. Blind AI grading of 845 tasks, same model and prompts on both sides, put agents running on Firecrawl Alexandria 21% ahead in answer quality.
  • Statutes and regulations from official sites: when we searched for California's non-compete law, the Firecrawl Government Index returned Business and Professions Code section 16600 from leginfo.legislature.ca.gov, including the subsection on noncompete clauses in employment. Its cites filter returns pages that interpret a given provision.
  • Opinions and dockets from CourtListener: results carry the court, filing date, cite count and opinion PDF. Opinions filed since January 2025 that mention ChatGPT together with sanctions, fictitious or nonexistent numbered 38 in our search.
  • Prices before calls: Claude can show what each tool costs, and Firecrawl Government Index searches are free.

Coverage limits

  • Cite counts, not treatment. CourtListener shows how many times a case has been cited but not whether it was reversed or overruled, so confirm it is still good law.
  • Default scope. Opinion searches return published decisions unless unpublished ones are requested, and docket coverage is limited to federal cases held in RECAP.
  • Research, not advice. Claude can locate and quote authority. Deciding how it applies to a client remains with the lawyer.
