How to check a company's BBB complaints in Claude

Read what customers have reported to BBB about a company, and how the company responded, before you bring in a contractor or commit to a service plan. Stick to what BBB shows, don't treat any complaint as proven, and flag
it if the profile name doesn't clearly match the company I asked about.

BBB profiles are living records kept by a private nonprofit, and an assistant can misread one in six ways.

1. A dated or made-up grade. Anthropic says Claude may not know about events after its training cutoff (Anthropic) and can occasionally give incorrect or misleading answers, including quotes that look authoritative without being grounded in fact (Anthropic). BBB updates ratings automatically as new information comes in (BBB), so a grade remembered from a year ago may be wrong today.
2. BBB isn't a regulator. It describes itself as a nonprofit, independent of government, without regulatory power (BBB). Calling its grade an official rating gives it more weight than it has.
3. Grades aren't complaint tallies. BBB's formula considers how many complaints there are (weighted by age), how many went unanswered or unresolved, licensing, years operating and more, and counts business size among its complaint factors (BBB). Checked directly against the API on Oct 9, 2026, Comcast carried an A+ even though more than 26,000 complaints had closed over three years.
4. Accreditation is a separate thing. BBB says accreditation is voluntary and independent of the rating, and that paying dues neither buys a grade nor erases a complaint (BBB). An unaccredited business can still earn a strong grade.
5. Complaints aren't rulings. BBB closes each complaint as resolved, answered, unresolved, unanswered or unpursuable, with "answered" covering cases where the company responded and the customer either rejected that response or never confirmed it (BBB). BBB adds that it stays neutral and can't make a business do anything (BBB).
6. Only three years are visible. Complaints stay on a profile for three years from the filing date, and when a business draws heavy volume, BBB may show the wording of only a representative sample (BBB). Skimming the first page can leave out most of the picture.
