M5V 3H1\n\nAttention: Yasser Beshr\n\nKneehill Energy Storage Facility Letter of Enquiry\nProceeding 30958\nApplication 30958-A001\n\nApproval of minor amendments\n\n1. Kneehill Solar GP Inc., by Application 30958-A001, registered on July 21, 2026, applied\nto the Alberta Utilities Commission for approval to make minor amendments to the 10-megawatt\n(MW) energy storage facility within the existing Kneehill Solar Generation Facility boundary, in\nthe Three Hills area.\n\n2. The proposed work is related to facilities previously approved by the Commission but not\nyet constructed in Approval 30539-D02-2026.\n1\n\n3. Kneehill Solar requested to update the equipment of the battery energy storage system\nfrom the SolBank system to the HyperBlock system, a type of HyperStrong system.\nKneehill Solar indicated that the number of containers would be reduced from eight to five,\ninverters would be reduced from eight to three, and transformers would be reduced from four to\nthree. Kneehill Solar confirmed that the HyperBlock system uses the same lithium iron\nphosphate battery chemistry as the approved configuration and that the proposed changes are not\nchanging the battery technology or associated characteristics.\n2\n\n4. Kneehill Solar confirmed that the project capability remains the same as what was\napproved, at 10 MW/20 megawatt-hours.\n\n5. Kneehill Solar stated that the proposed HyperBlock system incorporates safety systems\nand design features that are comparable to the approved SolBank system and are intended to\nprevent, detect and mitigate thermal events, fire hazards and explosion risks. Kneehill Solar\nconfirmed that it will continue to meet the safety obligations in the approval, including energy\nstorage facility-related training, ongoing safety upgrades and annual updates to the site-specific\nemergency response plan.\n\n1\n Energy Storage Facility Approval 30539-D02-2026, Proceeding 305… [2,449 more characters]",
