Can ChatGPT read JavaScript-heavy websites?
ChatGPT usually can't read JavaScript-heavy websites with its own page fetch. In published tests, that fetch reads the HTML the server sends and doesn't run the page's scripts, so on a site that relies on client-side JavaScript rendering it sees the navigation and footer but not the main content. In Glenn Gabe's GSQI retest on October 19, 2026, ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity all missed the main content of JavaScript-built pages, while Gemini and Copilot read it from Google's and Bing's indexes.
| Factor | ChatGPT page fetch | ChatGPT cloud browser | Firecrawl plugin in ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Runs the page's JavaScript | No, in the October 2026 GSQI retest | Uses its own browser on a cloud computer | Yes, scrape renders JavaScript pages |
| Availability | Built into ChatGPT | ChatGPT Work on paid plans, excluding Free and Go | Plugin from the ChatGPT plugin directory and a free Firecrawl account |
| What it returns | Text from the HTML the server sends | What ChatGPT reads as it clicks through pages | Clean Markdown, or JSON fields from a schema |
| Best for | Static articles and docs | Multi-step tasks such as forms and bookings | JavaScript pages, data extraction and whole sections of a site |
| How to start it | Paste a URL in the chat | Start a task in Work | Ask ChatGPT to use Firecrawl |
Use ChatGPT's built-in fetch when the text you need is in the page source; view the source or fetch the URL with curl to check. Use the cloud browser for tasks that need clicks and form fills. The Firecrawl plugin fits when the content only appears after JavaScript runs, or when you want many pages from one site. If you own the site, serve the main content in the initial HTML so assistants can read it without help.
Install the Firecrawl ChatGPT plugin, connect your Firecrawl account, and ask ChatGPT to use Firecrawl to scrape the URL. The Firecrawl Scrape API renders the page and returns Markdown, and the plugin can also map and crawl the rest of the site so ChatGPT can summarize every page. Claude's own fetch has the same gap, and the Firecrawl connector for Claude fixes it there too.
