How to use Claude to search SEC filings

Last updated: Oct 21, 2026

Ask which companies disclosed a topic in their 8-Ks this month, see a company's latest filings with the items each one covers, or read one part of a 10-K right in the conversation. The Firecrawl connector brings SEC EDGAR into Claude through Firecrawl Alexandria, so you can search SEC filings in Claude against the SEC's EDGAR database itself.

Best for

  • Following a company's disclosures between earnings calls, starting from the item codes on each 8-K.
  • Screening many filers at once for a phrase, such as "going concern" or "material weakness", within a filing window.
  • Pulling Item 7 or Item 1A from a 10-K or 10-Q so Claude can summarize or compare it.

Connector and data providers

Connector: the Firecrawl connector. With it switched on, Claude can call SEC EDGAR in Firecrawl Alexandria, and lookups are paid from your team's Firecrawl credit balance.

Starter prompt

Change the company and the window to suit you:

Use Firecrawl to check NVIDIA's (NVDA) latest SEC filings through the SEC
EDGAR provider in Firecrawl Alexandria. Before each tool runs, tell me what
it costs.

Then report:
- NVIDIA's three newest 8-Ks with filing date, item codes, item captions
  and a link to each.
- The opening of Item 1A (Risk Factors) in the most recent 10-K, plus the
  date that 10-K was filed.
- Whether any 8-K/A amendments were filed in that stretch.

Quote the filings word for word, link each one, and give no investment
advice.

Before you start

  • Connect Firecrawl. Open the Firecrawl connector and choose Connect. Sign in to Firecrawl in the tab that opens, pick your team and approve access; a free account can be made in the same flow, and there's no API key to paste. Firecrawl in Claude walks through it.
  • Turn it on in the chat. Click +, open Connectors and enable Firecrawl.
  • Expect 5 Firecrawl credits a call. Every SEC EDGAR tool is priced the same, and Claude can read you the price before it runs one.

To skip the approval prompt on lookups, open Customize → Connectors in Claude, select Firecrawl and set Read-only tools to Always allow under Tool permissions. SEC EDGAR calls cost Firecrawl credits, so leave approval on if you want to confirm each one.

Limitations of using Claude to search SEC filings without Firecrawl

Filings research depends on the exact document, form and date, and Claude without a filings source runs into six gaps.

  1. Recent filings postdate its training. Each Claude model has a knowledge cutoff, June 2026 for Opus 5.5, and Anthropic says the model may not know about later events (Anthropic). A 10-Q filed last week sits past that line.
  2. Web search is an extra step, and a setting. Claude's web search grounds replies in live pages with citations, though a Team or Enterprise workspace needs an Owner to enable the feature in organization settings before members can use it (Anthropic). Even then, the pages it finds are often coverage of a filing.
  3. Answers can be wrong without looking wrong. Anthropic says Claude occasionally produces incorrect or misleading responses (Anthropic). On filings specifically, Patronus AI researchers found that large language models frequently missed questions built from SEC documents (CNBC, Dec 2023).
  4. No enforced form or date filters. EDGAR's search page lets you set filing dates, form, filer and CIK (SEC). A prompt can name a form or a date range, but Claude has no EDGAR filter to enforce it, so results outside those limits can still come back.
  5. Corrections live in separate filings. Changes to an 8-K already on file go on a Form 8-K/A, per SEC staff guidance (SEC), so the original alone can be out of date.
  6. Reports are long. A single 10-K item can run past 110,000 characters, as Item 1A of NVIDIA's latest 10-K did in our test, which is more than a reply can work through in one pass.

How Claude finds and reads SEC filings with Firecrawl

Claude searches SEC filings with Firecrawl through four parts:

  • Firecrawl Alexandria: Firecrawl's library of sourced data for agents, combining 100+ official providers that are paid per use under contract with indexes Firecrawl maintains itself across public websites, scholarly work, software docs and official records. In Firecrawl's evaluation of 845 tasks, where the model and prompts stayed fixed and the grading was blind, agents given Firecrawl Alexandria earned 21% higher answer-quality scores than agents relying on their usual web search.
  • Full-text search across filers: "tariffs" in 8-Ks filed between Oct 1 and Oct 20, 2026 returned 302 matching documents, served 100 at a time with each filer, its 8-K items and a link. Exhibits such as earnings releases count as separate hits.
  • One company's filing trail: the latest three NVIDIA 8-Ks arrived dated Sep 3, 2026 (Item 8.01), Aug 26, 2026 (Items 2.02 and 9.01) and Aug 17, 2026 (Items 1.01, 2.03 and 7.01), so Claude can spot the results release and the debt-related filing from the codes alone.
  • Read only: Claude gets lookup access through your Firecrawl sign-in only, which lets it read filings while leaving filing, trading and every other account out of reach.

Build your own SEC filing workflow

Adjust the request to how you read filings. For a long-term holder reviewing one company:

Use Firecrawl to list AAPL's 10-Q and 8-K filings since July 1, 2026 from
SEC EDGAR, newest first, with item codes and links, then give me the first
2,000 characters of Item 7 (MD&A) from the most recent 10-Q.

For a researcher screening the whole market:

With Firecrawl, run an EDGAR full-text search for "material cybersecurity
incident" across 8-Ks filed in the past 30 days. Keep main 8-K documents,
and show company, filing date, item codes and link for each.

Stating the form, the window and the amount of text up front keeps Claude's answers anchored to specific filings.

Take it further

Open every document in a filing

Use Firecrawl to find TSLA's newest 8-K on SEC EDGAR and list each document
in it, exhibits included, with links.

Spot new risk factors

With Firecrawl, get Item 1A from MSFT's last two 10-Ks via SEC EDGAR in
Firecrawl Alexandria and tell me which risk headings appear only in the
newer one, quoted.

Track amendments

Use Firecrawl to show AMZN's 8-Ks from the last 12 months including
amendments, and flag every 8-K/A.

Check prices before running anything

Use Firecrawl to list the SEC EDGAR tools in Firecrawl Alexandria for
searching filings or reading 10-K items, with the price of each call.

What it costs

Browsing tools, reading what they accept and checking prices are free. Firecrawl credits are spent only when Claude calls a provider, billed to the connected team. Plan allowances are on the Firecrawl pricing page.

Coverage limits

  • SEC filers only. The provider reads what's filed on EDGAR. Full-text search starts in 2001; earlier filings are reachable through a company's filing history.
  • One filing can match twice. Full-text search counts each matching document, so an 8-K and its exhibit may both appear. Tell Claude to keep main documents if you want one row per filing.
  • No investment advice. Claude relays what the filings state, and the decisions stay with you.
