Starter prompt
Change the title and city to your own, then send:
Use Firecrawl to get ZipRecruiter's salary estimate for a data analyst in
Chicago, IL from Firecrawl Alexandria, plus the nationwide estimate for
that title. Check what each call costs and tell me before running it.
Answer in three parts:
- Chicago's 10th, 25th, median, 75th and 90th percentile yearly pay.
- The national version of those five numbers, and the dollar gap between
the two medians.
- The source page for both estimates.
Keep the exact figures and treat them as a market benchmark, not an offer. Before you start
- Link your Firecrawl account. Open the Firecrawl connector listing and press Connect. In the Firecrawl window that pops up, log in, select a team and approve access; newcomers can make a free account right there, and there is no API key to handle. Screens for each step are on Firecrawl in Claude.
- Turn the connector on per chat. Click the + button, open Connectors and flip Firecrawl on.
- Keep some credits on hand. A ZipRecruiter lookup that finds its page is 5 Firecrawl credits, so the starter prompt above spends 10.
How Claude pulls a city's pay percentiles from ZipRecruiter with Firecrawl
Behind a Claude salary lookup through Firecrawl sit four pieces:
- Firecrawl Alexandria: where Firecrawl keeps structured data for AI agents, with 100+ official providers, every one paid under contract, and web, research, developer and government indexes that Firecrawl builds itself. Firecrawl benchmarked it on 845 tasks, holding the model and prompts constant while an AI judge scored blind, and found 21% better answer quality when agents could draw on Firecrawl Alexandria compared with agents given built-in web tools alone.
- A salary benchmark per city: the Salary tool needs a job title and, optionally, a city in "City, ST" form; leave the city off and you get the US estimate. It returns five annual base pay percentiles and the page they were read from. According to ZipRecruiter, the estimates come from scanning active job listings in its database.
- Listings for contrast: Search jobs shows what individual postings in that city advertise, which lets Claude report posted pay alongside the benchmark without merging them.
- Costs shown, nothing written: Claude can look up a tool's price at no charge before calling it, and the connector only reads, so Claude can't submit applications or message employers through it.

Build your own salary lookup workflow
Write the prompt for the call you need to make. For a candidate weighing an offer:
Use Firecrawl to check ZipRecruiter's salary estimate for a registered
nurse in Denver, CO. My offer is $85,000 a year. Tell me which percentile
range that lands in, and confirm the price before the call. For a professional comparing two cities:
Use Firecrawl to pull ZipRecruiter salary estimates for a data analyst in
Austin, TX and in Chicago, IL. Line up the five percentiles in a table and
state the median difference in dollars and in percent.Claude picks the right tool faster when the prompt names a precise title, uses the "City, ST" format and says what the numbers are for.
Take it further
Compare the benchmark with real listings
Use Firecrawl to get ZipRecruiter's salary estimate for a registered nurse
in Denver, CO, then search ZipRecruiter jobs for that title and city. Show
the listings that state their pay, annualized, and flag any above the
estimate's median.Get the US-wide estimate
Use Firecrawl to find ZipRecruiter's national salary estimate for a
software engineer, with all five percentiles and the page it came from.Price the tools before running anything
Use Firecrawl to list the tools that report what a job title pays in a US
city, along with what each call costs. What it costs
Claude can search for tools, look at what they return and read their prices without spending anything. Credits come off the connected team's balance only when a ZipRecruiter tool actually runs, and Firecrawl pricing sets out the credits in every plan.
| ZipRecruiter tool | Question it answers | Credits per call |
|---|---|---|
| Salary | How pay for a title is spread in a US city or nationally | 5 |
| Search jobs | What employers hiring for that title in that city are advertising | 5 |
Comparing a city with the national figure takes two Salary calls, or 10 credits. Pairing one Salary call with one Search jobs call also comes to 10. Claude sees the price ahead of each call, so having it stop for your approval costs nothing extra.
Connect Firecrawl and ask Claude what any job title pays in your city. Checking which tool fits is free.
Related use cases
- How to use Claude to find someone's work email: with the market rate in hand, contact the hiring manager or recruiter directly.
- BLS labor statistics: official wage and employment series, among them QCEW pay by county, metro and industry, to cross-check salary by city from a government source.
- Greenhouse job boards: a single company's open roles, including any pay ranges listed in each posting.
Coverage limits
- United States only. Salary works for US cities in "City, ST" form and for the country as a whole. Titles without a ZipRecruiter salary page return a not-found result, which cost nothing when we tried it.
- Base pay before tax. Figures are annual base salary, so for take-home pay you'd still need a salary calculator by job title and state. The percentiles describe the spread of pay, not seniority, and the number the tool calls the median is labeled average annual pay on ZipRecruiter's own page.
- Listings need a second look. Each Search jobs page holds 20 cards, sponsored ones included, and some show posting dates over a year old, so read the date before relying on a range.
