How to track mergers and acquisitions in ChatGPT

Last updated: Oct 09, 2026

Check where any deal stands, what it's worth and when it's expected to close, without relying on articles written the day it was announced. Add the Firecrawl plugin to track mergers and acquisitions in ChatGPT through Firecrawl Alexandria and Benzinga's M&A calendar.

Best for

  • Checking whether a pending deal has closed, and on what terms.
  • Listing every merger or acquisition a company has been part of, as buyer or target.
  • Following pending deals expected to close this quarter.

Plugins and data providers

Plugin: the Firecrawl plugin. Hooks ChatGPT up to Firecrawl Alexandria. Deal lookups are charged to your Firecrawl account.

Starter prompt

Paste this into ChatGPT and name the deals you care about:

@firecrawl Use Benzinga's M&A calendar through Firecrawl Alexandria to
check on deals involving CSCO from the past two years. Show me the price of
each tool before you run it.

Give me a short summary:
- Every deal where Cisco was the acquirer or the target, with the other
party, deal size, payment type and status.
- For completed deals, the closing date. For pending ones, the expected
  closing date.
- The two most recent news stories about the largest pending deal, if any.

Report what the records say and flag anything that looks out of date.

Before you start

  • Install Firecrawl. Find the plugin in ChatGPT's directory, or use the button below.
  • Sign in with your Firecrawl account. Deal lookups run on it. Create one if you don't have it.
  • Accept Benzinga's terms on first use. Team accounts may need an admin to accept them.

Limitations of using ChatGPT to track mergers and acquisitions

Tracking a deal means knowing its status today, and on its own ChatGPT has only training data with a cutoff date and whatever its web search turns up. That causes six problems.

  1. Stale by default. Without a tool such as search, ChatGPT's answers don't include events after its training cutoff (OpenAI). Any deal announced, amended or closed since then is missing.
  2. Deals keep moving. After a merger filing, the parties must wait 30 days (15 for a cash tender offer or a bankruptcy) before closing, unless the agencies end the wait early. If the agency sends a Second Request for more information, the deal can't close until the companies comply and a second waiting period passes (FTC). Articles written at announcement aren't necessarily updated through any of this.
  3. Deals get called off. In December 2025, Aya Healthcare terminated its proposed acquisition of Cross Country Healthcare, according to the FTC. A search can surface coverage of an announcement without the later news that the deal ended.
  4. Terms are scattered. Price, payment type and expected closing date can be spread across different articles. The merger agreement itself is reported on Form 8-K under Item 1.01 (SEC), which a general web search may not surface.
  5. Private and small deals. Data on private-company deals is limited, and much of the deal data that exists sits in subscription databases such as Capital IQ, PitchBook and Mergermarket (Library of Congress). ChatGPT's search can't reach those, so small and private deals are easy to miss.
  6. Errors in the numbers. A deal summary can come back with a date or fact that's simply wrong, delivered confidently (OpenAI), and a 2024 finance review found ChatGPT slips on numerical data. Deal values, exchange ratios and per-share prices are easy places for that to happen.

How it works

Following deals in ChatGPT involves three pieces:

  • Firecrawl Alexandria: connects AI agents straight to data sources. It includes more than 100 official providers, paid under agreement whenever their data is pulled, along with Firecrawl's web index and its specialist indexes (Research, Developer and Government). A Firecrawl evaluation over 845 tasks kept the model and prompts constant, and agents that could call Firecrawl Alexandria produced answers judged 21% better than agents using only built-in web tools.
  • Status and terms: ChatGPT goes to Benzinga's M&A calendar for where each deal stands and what it's worth, filtered by ticker whether the company is buying or being bought.
  • The story around it: Benzinga's news search adds the coverage, so you can see why a deal stalled or changed.

Build your own deal tracking workflow

Point the prompt at the deals you follow. For one deal you're waiting on:

@firecrawl Is the Hewlett Packard Enterprise acquisition of Juniper Networks
completed? Give me the deal size, payment type and closing date, plus the
latest news story about it.

For a sector pipeline:

@firecrawl Show pending acquisitions expected to close this quarter, sorted
by expected closing date, only the notable ones. Include acquirer, target,
size and payment type in a table.

Say which deals or companies, the status you care about and the fields you need, and the answer comes back as a short table.

Coverage limits

  • Deals Benzinga tracks. The calendar covers the deals Benzinga records, so small private deals may not appear.
  • Withdrawn records. Benzinga sometimes removes a deal record it published earlier, so ask again before relying on an older answer.
  • No investment advice. ChatGPT pulls the published deal data and leaves the decision to you.
