How to track analyst upgrades and downgrades in ChatGPT

Last updated: Oct 09, 2026

Find out who upgraded or downgraded a stock, how far they moved the price target, and whether that analyst tends to be right. Install the Firecrawl plugin and ChatGPT tracks stock upgrades and downgrades through Firecrawl Alexandria, using Benzinga's analyst ratings, consensus and analyst roster.

Best for

  • Reviewing every analyst rating change and price target move on a stock this week or month.
  • Checking where the consensus analyst rating stands before earnings or a big decision.
  • Weighing a call by the analyst's track record before acting on it.

Plugins and data providers

Plugin: the Firecrawl plugin. Lets ChatGPT call Benzinga inside Firecrawl Alexandria, charging your Firecrawl account per lookup.

Starter prompt

Swap AAPL for the stock you follow, then run it:

@firecrawl Using Benzinga's analyst data through Firecrawl Alexandria, review
the analyst coverage on AAPL for the last 30 days. Tell me the price of each
tool before you run it.

Give me a short update:
- Every upgrade, downgrade and initiation, with the date, firm, analyst,
prior and new rating, and prior and new price target.
- Any price target changes where the rating stayed the same.
- The current consensus rating and consensus price target, with the count
of analysts at buy, hold and sell.
- For the two most recent rating changes, the analyst's one-year success
  rate and average return.

Quote the data as Benzinga reports it and don't give buy or sell advice.

Before you start

  • Use a paid Firecrawl plan. Benzinga's ratings calendar, the tool behind upgrades and downgrades, runs only on paid plans. Sign up or upgrade first.
  • Add the plugin to ChatGPT. Install it with the button below and link your Firecrawl account.
  • Approve Benzinga's terms. They appear on the first Benzinga call. On team accounts, an org admin might have to approve them before anyone else can.

Limitations of using ChatGPT to track analyst upgrades and downgrades

Analysts publish on their own schedule, dozens of times a day across the market, and a chatbot working from memory and search keeps falling behind. Six problems come up.

  1. Old calls look current. ChatGPT's built-in knowledge ends at a training cutoff, and its search can be blocked from a page by a paywall, a technical issue or the site's robots.txt (OpenAI). A downgrade from last quarter can come back as if it were the analyst's view today.
  2. Targets go stale. When a stock performs poorly and some analysts are slow to update their targets, dispersion rises and the consensus target becomes too high, according to a 2024 study in Management Science. An average quoted from an article inherits that lag.
  3. Ratings and targets are separate histories. FINRA requires member firms' research to chart the dates on which each rating or price target was assigned or changed (FINRA Rule 2241). A headline that says "upgraded" often drops the target move, or the other way round.
  4. Labels don't mean the same thing everywhere. The meaning of terms like buy, hold or outperform can differ from firm to firm, and some analysts work for firms that underwrite or own the stocks they cover (SEC). Flattening every call into one scale hides that.
  5. Not every analyst is equally right. An average accuracy figure masks large differences between individual analysts (AnaChart), so a call means more when you know the record of the person who made it.
  6. Invented calls. ChatGPT can produce fabricated quotes and references to sources that don't exist (OpenAI). A made-up upgrade from a real bank reads exactly like a real one.

How it works

The workflow rests on three Benzinga tools and one catalog:

  • Firecrawl Alexandria: lets an AI agent read data straight from the companies that publish it. Over 100 official providers are in it, each paid under an agreement when its data is used, and Firecrawl's own indexes of the web, research, developer content and government material sit beside them. Over 845 evaluation tasks, where only the tools changed, answers from agents using Firecrawl Alexandria were rated 21% better than answers from agents that only had built-in web tools.
  • Individual calls: the ratings calendar filters by ticker, date range, action (upgrade, downgrade, initiation and others), firm, analyst and Benzinga's importance score.
  • The aggregate view: consensus ratings summarize where all covering analysts stand on one stock.
  • The analyst behind the call: the roster turns an analyst's name into an id and an accuracy record, which you can also use to follow every call that analyst makes.

ChatGPT reads ratings through your Firecrawl account only. It can't see your brokerage or place orders.

Build your own analyst ratings workflow

Shape the prompt around the question you're really asking. To screen a watchlist for fresh upgrades:

@firecrawl Check MSFT, GOOGL, AMZN, META and NFLX for analyst upgrades and
initiations in the last two weeks, importance 3 or higher only. For each one,
show the firm, the new rating and the new price target, then sort by the
size of the target change.

To follow one analyst whose calls you trust:

@firecrawl Look up Dan Ives in Benzinga's analyst roster and show his firm,
one-year success rate and average return. Then list every rating he issued
in the last 90 days, with the ticker, action and price target.

Each prompt says which stocks or people to cover, which actions count and how to order the answer, so the reply stays short.

Coverage limits

  • US-listed companies. Benzinga's ratings calendar covers analysts' calls on US-listed stocks.
  • Ratings without the report. Each record carries the rating and target, and sometimes a short note, but not the analyst's full research report or reasoning.
  • No investment advice. ChatGPT pulls the published ratings and leaves the decision to you.
