Find every 8-K that mentions a phrase, pull a company's latest filings with their item codes, and read a 10-K's risk factors without opening EDGAR in another tab. The Firecrawl plugin lets you search SEC filings in ChatGPT through Firecrawl Alexandria, where the SEC EDGAR provider reads the SEC's EDGAR system directly.
Best for
- Investors who want a company's newest 8-Ks, with what each one reports, before reading the documents.
- Analysts tracking a theme, such as tariffs or a cybersecurity incident, across every company that disclosed it in a date range.
- Anyone who needs one 10-K or 10-Q section, such as Item 1A or Item 7, as text they can question in the chat.

Starter prompt
Put in the company you follow and the period you care about:
@firecrawl Use the SEC EDGAR provider in Firecrawl Alexandria to look at
NVIDIA's (NVDA) recent SEC filings. Show the price of each tool before you
run it.
Give me:
- The three most recent 8-Ks, each with the filing date, the item codes and
captions, and the document link.
- The first few paragraphs of Item 1A (Risk Factors) from the latest 10-K,
with the filing date of that 10-K.
- Any 8-K/A amendments filed in the same period.
Quote filing text exactly and link every filing. No investment advice. Before you start

- Link your Firecrawl account. SEC EDGAR calls are paid from its Firecrawl credits. Create one if you're new.
- Know the price. Each SEC EDGAR tool costs 5 Firecrawl credits a call, and ChatGPT can list prices before it runs anything.
Limitations of using ChatGPT to search SEC filings without Firecrawl
A filing question depends on the exact document, form and date, and ChatGPT working alone has five gaps on those.
- Recent filings are past the cutoff. OpenAI says its models are trained up to a point and don't include later events unless a tool is used (OpenAI). An 8-K filed this week isn't something ChatGPT can recall.
- Search finds articles about the filing. OpenAI warns that what search returns, citations included, can miss things, lag behind or simply be wrong, and points users to an authoritative source when accuracy matters (OpenAI). A news recap of a 10-K can drop the qualifier that changes its meaning.
- Filing answers can be confidently wrong. OpenAI lists fabricated quotes and citations among ChatGPT's failure modes. Researchers at Patronus AI also found that large language models frequently failed to answer questions drawn from SEC filings (CNBC, Dec 2023).
- No form or date filters in a chat. EDGAR's own full-text search narrows results by filing dates, form, company and CIK (SEC). A prompt can name a form or a date range, but ChatGPT has no EDGAR filter to enforce it, so a 10-Q exhibit and an unrelated company can show up next to the 8-K you meant.
- Corrections arrive as separate filings. The SEC requires changes to a filed 8-K to go on a Form 8-K/A (SEC staff guidance). An answer built on the original filing can miss what the company later corrected.
How ChatGPT searches and reads EDGAR filings with Firecrawl
Four pieces let ChatGPT search SEC filings:
- Firecrawl Alexandria: where the SEC EDGAR tools live. It pairs more than a hundred licensed and official providers, each paid when an agent uses its data, with Firecrawl's own indexes of web pages, academic papers, code documentation and public-sector records. Firecrawl tested it on 845 tasks, same model and same prompts each time, and answers from the agents that had Firecrawl Alexandria were judged 21% better than answers from agents limited to standard web tools.
- Full-text search: a query for "tariffs" in 8-Ks filed Oct 1 to Oct 20, 2026 matched 302 documents, returned 100 per page, each tagged with its filer, 8-K items and a link. Earnings-release exhibits come back too, so ask ChatGPT to keep the main 8-K if that's all you want.
- Filings with item codes: NVIDIA's three newest 8-Ks came back as Sep 3, 2026 (Item 8.01, Other Events), Aug 26, 2026 (Items 2.02 and 9.01) and Aug 17, 2026 (Items 1.01, 2.03 and 7.01), so ChatGPT can tell an earnings release from a financing before opening anything.
- Sections as text: the Risk Factors item of NVIDIA's latest 10-K, filed Feb 25, 2026, runs past 110,000 characters, so a length cap keeps the reply short and the full text stays one call away.

Coverage limits
- EDGAR filers only. The provider covers what companies file with the SEC. Full-text search reaches back to 2001, and older filings come through a company's filing list.
- Search hits are documents. Full-text search returns each matching document, so one 8-K with an exhibit can appear twice. Ask ChatGPT to keep main documents only when that matters.
- No investment advice. ChatGPT reports what the filings say and leaves the decision to you.
