How to use ChatGPT at work

Last updated: Oct 12, 2026

Use ChatGPT for the research parts of your job, such as account prep, competitor checks, vendor shortlists and reading a public company's filings, with answers drawn from business data instead of memory. The Firecrawl plugin connects ChatGPT to Firecrawl Alexandria, where providers such as Apollo, SEC EDGAR, PeerSpot and Similarweb answer the question. This page walks through examples by team, each with a prompt and what came back when we ran the tools.

Best for

  • Sales and success teams preparing for a call with an account they know little about.
  • Marketers and founders checking what competitors are doing and how big they are.
  • Finance, IT and operations staff comparing vendors or reading a public company's annual report.

Plugins and data providers

Plugin: the Firecrawl plugin. With it, ChatGPT gains web search, page scraping, monitoring and the Firecrawl Alexandria catalog, with paid lookups drawn from your team's Firecrawl credits. It also works inside ChatGPT Work, which OpenAI describes as able to use your files, plugins and approved tools to complete a task (OpenAI).

Starter prompt

Change the company and your role, then paste it in:

@firecrawl I have a call with Linear (linear.app) tomorrow. Use Firecrawl
Alexandria, show me each tool's price before running it, and stick to
free searches until I approve anything paid.

Prepare a one-page account brief:
- Company snapshot from Apollo: headcount, founded, funding to date,
latest round, headcount growth and notable tools they use.
- Who to talk to: people with marketing or operations titles, as free
  previews only.
- What they're hiring for right now.

Mark anything you couldn't find as unknown. Don't guess numbers.

Before you start

  • Install the plugin. The button below adds Firecrawl to ChatGPT.
  • Connect a Firecrawl account. Free tools like Apollo's person search cost nothing, and paid ones draw from your credits. Sign up for Firecrawl to get started.
  • Check your company's AI policy. Some providers, such as Benzinga, need a paid Firecrawl plan, and your employer may have rules about which tools and data you can use with ChatGPT.

Limitations of using ChatGPT at work without Firecrawl

Using ChatGPT in the workplace usually means asking about a current number or a specific record. Plain ChatGPT struggles with both, for five reasons.

  1. Confident wrong answers. OpenAI says ChatGPT can give incorrect facts and dates and sound sure while doing it, and asks users to verify quotes, data and references (OpenAI). A made-up headcount or revenue figure in a client deck is costly.
  2. Last quarter is missing. The same OpenAI page notes that answers don't include events after the training cutoff unless tools are used. A competitor's latest funding round or a new 10-K can be absent.
  3. Licensed data sits behind walls. OpenAI notes that paywalls, robots.txt preferences and technical issues can stop ChatGPT from getting information from a site (OpenAI). Company databases and review platforms are the sources most work questions need.
  4. What you paste in matters. The FTC warns that people using AI models may reveal sensitive or confidential information, including internal documents and their own users' data (FTC). Asking about public records keeps internal material out of the prompt.
  5. Managers may not know. A Federal Reserve note cites a Conference Board survey in which management was unaware of the worker's AI use for 29% of respondents (Federal Reserve). Work that cites its sources is easier to share openly.

How ChatGPT routes work questions to the right source with Firecrawl

The plugin turns ChatGPT for business research into a set of lookups:

  • Firecrawl Alexandria: Firecrawl's catalog of data for agents. It combines 100+ official providers, licensed and paid, with indexes Firecrawl maintains over web pages, papers, technical documentation and public records. On an 845-task evaluation with identical model and prompts, agents that could call Firecrawl Alexandria finished 21% ahead on answer quality versus agents with default web tools alone.
  • The right provider per question: company facts go to Apollo, annual reports to SEC EDGAR, software opinions to PeerSpot and traffic to Similarweb. ChatGPT picks the tool and tells you which one it used.
  • Free first, paid on approval: prices show before a call, Apollo's person search is free, and several tools charge nothing when they return no data.
  • Read-only lookups: Alexandria tools look things up. They don't send emails, change records or sign you up for anything. Setting up a Firecrawl Monitor is the exception: it creates an ongoing watch on a page.

ChatGPT work examples by team

We ran each provider below on Oct 12, 2026. The prompts are starting points, so swap in your own companies.

Sales: prep for an account call

Apollo's company enrichment turned linear.app into a profile in one 30-credit call: about 300 employees, founded in 2019, $134.2M raised with a Series C in June 2025, and 44% headcount growth over twelve months. It also listed tools the company uses, from Snowflake to HubSpot.

@firecrawl Enrich linear.app with Apollo and give me headcount, funding
history, headcount growth and the sales or marketing tools they use. Then
show free previews of people titled Head of Marketing or VP Marketing.

The person search returned previews with first names, titles and a has-email flag, at no cost. For a full prospecting flow, see How to generate B2B leads in ChatGPT.

Finance and strategy: read a 10-K without opening it

SEC EDGAR's sections tool pulled the Risk Factors section from Snowflake's 10-K filed on Mar 20, 2026, for 5 credits. Its opening risk notes revenue of $4.7 billion for the fiscal year ended Jan 31, 2026.

@firecrawl Pull Item 1A Risk Factors and Item 7 MD&A from Snowflake's
latest 10-K via SEC EDGAR. Summarize the five risks that matter most
to a customer signing a multi-year contract, quoting the filing.

IT and procurement: shortlist software vendors

PeerSpot's comparison of Snowflake and Databricks came back with Snowflake at 8.4 out of 10 from 108 reviews and Databricks at 8.2 from 94, plus mindshare in the Cloud Data Warehouse category (15.3% and 9.4% as of October 2026) and reviewer quotes on ROI, support and setup cost.

@firecrawl Compare Snowflake and Databricks on PeerSpot. Give ratings,
review counts and the main complaints about pricing and support for
each, with reviewer quotes.

Marketing: size up a competitor

Similarweb returned about 8.3 million worldwide visits to ahrefs.com for August 2026, at 110 credits for the one metric. Pair it with Trends to see whether interest in a category is rising.

@firecrawl Get worldwide monthly visits for August 2026 from Similarweb
for ahrefs.com and semrush.com, then compare US search interest in
"ahrefs" and "semrush" over the past 12 months with Trends.

Recruiting and HR: see who is hiring for what

Apollo's job postings tool lists a company's open roles with title, location, posting date and a link to the listing. It works from the Apollo ID that company enrichment returns, so ChatGPT enriches the company first. For Linear it found 28 open postings, the newest a Customer Success Manager role in New York posted on Oct 10, 2026.

@firecrawl List open job postings at vercel.com and linear.app from Apollo,
grouped by team based on the job titles, with location and posting date.
Show the price before running.

Build your own work workflow

There's no single answer to how to use ChatGPT for work, so write the prompt around the decision you need to make. For a customer success manager before a renewal:

@firecrawl Before my renewal call with notion.so, enrich the company with
Apollo, list what they're hiring for, and flag anything that suggests
growth or cost-cutting. Keep it to one page.

For an operations lead choosing a tool:

@firecrawl I'm choosing between Asana and Monday.com. Find both on
PeerSpot, compare ratings and the top complaints, and tell me which
reviews come from companies with 200 to 1,000 employees.

Naming the company, the sources and the format you want back keeps ChatGPT on records instead of filling in from memory.

Take it further

Brief me on a public competitor

@firecrawl List Snowflake's 8-K filings from the last 90 days on SEC
EDGAR and explain each one in a sentence.

Watch a competitor's pricing page

@firecrawl Monitor https://linear.app/pricing and tell me when anything
on the page changes.

Turn research into a deliverable

@firecrawl Put the account brief, hiring list and PeerSpot comparison
into a table I can paste into a slide, with the source for each row.

Read reviews in depth

@firecrawl Get the latest page of PeerSpot reviews for Snowflake and
summarize what people in finance roles say about cost.

Check costs up front

@firecrawl Which tools can enrich a company, read SEC filings, compare
software reviews or show site traffic? List each with its price.

What it costs

Discovering tools costs nothing, and neither does reading their prices. Credits are deducted only at the moment ChatGPT calls a tool that has a price, and Firecrawl pricing shows plan allowances.

Coverage limits

  • Check the company match. Apollo treats a domain as a more reliable key than a company name because names collide, so give domains where you can and confirm the company name in each answer.
  • Public and licensed data only. These tools don't reach your CRM, inbox or internal documents, and Apollo's person previews hide surnames and emails until you pay to reveal a contact.
  • Similarweb by month. Traffic data covers one complete month per call, and worldwide requests worked more reliably than country-level ones in our tests.
