How to track mergers and acquisitions in ChatGPT

TL;DR

  • The problem: Deals change status for months after they are announced, and ChatGPT tends to answer from coverage of the announcement.
  • The fix: The Firecrawl plugin gives ChatGPT Firecrawl Alexandria, including Benzinga's M&A calendar.
  • What you get: Each deal's acquirer, target, size, payment type, status and expected or actual closing date.

Ask ChatGPT whether a deal has closed and it usually answers from articles written when the deal was announced. To track mergers and acquisitions in ChatGPT with current data, add the Firecrawl plugin. ChatGPT then has Firecrawl Alexandria, and through it Benzinga's M&A calendar, so it can look up where any deal stands and what it's worth.

Limitations of using ChatGPT to track mergers and acquisitions

Tracking a deal means knowing its status today, and on its own ChatGPT has only training data with a cutoff date and whatever its web search turns up. That causes six problems.

  1. Stale by default. Without a tool such as search, ChatGPT's answers don't include events after its training cutoff (OpenAI). Any deal announced, amended or closed since then is missing.
  2. Deals keep moving. After a merger filing, the parties must wait 30 days (15 for a cash tender offer or a bankruptcy) before closing, unless the agencies end the wait early. If the agency sends a Second Request for more information, the deal can't close until the companies comply and a second waiting period passes (FTC). Articles written at announcement aren't necessarily updated through any of this.
  3. Deals get called off. In December 2025, Aya Healthcare terminated its proposed acquisition of Cross Country Healthcare, according to the FTC. A search can surface coverage of an announcement without the later news that the deal ended.
  4. Terms are scattered. Price, payment type and expected closing date can be spread across different articles. The merger agreement itself is reported on Form 8-K under Item 1.01 (SEC), which a general web search may not surface.
  5. Private and small deals. Data on private-company deals is limited, and much of the deal data that exists sits in subscription databases such as Capital IQ, PitchBook and Mergermarket (Library of Congress). ChatGPT's search can't reach those, so small and private deals are easy to miss.
  6. Errors in the numbers. A deal summary can come back with a date or fact that's simply wrong, delivered confidently (OpenAI), and a 2024 finance review found ChatGPT slips on numerical data. Deal values, exchange ratios and per-share prices are easy places for that to happen.

What is Firecrawl Alexandria?

Firecrawl Alexandria connects AI agents straight to data sources. It includes more than 100 official providers, paid under agreement whenever their data is pulled, along with Firecrawl's web index and its specialist indexes (Research, Developer and Government).

For deals, ChatGPT goes to Benzinga's M&A calendar for status and terms, and to Benzinga's news search for the coverage. It looks up the tool, checks its inputs and price, then calls it.

A Firecrawl evaluation over 845 tasks kept the model and prompts constant, and agents that could call Firecrawl Alexandria produced answers judged 21% better than agents using only built-in web tools.

How to track M&A deals in ChatGPT

You'll need a ChatGPT account and a Firecrawl account (create one if you don't have it). Then:

  1. Find the Firecrawl plugin in ChatGPT's plugin directory and install it.
  2. Sign in with your Firecrawl account when prompted.
  3. Start a new chat and ask about a deal.

Through the plugin, ChatGPT reaches Firecrawl Alexandria, picks the tool that fits your question, checks what it costs and runs it. The plugin announcement covers everything else it can do.

Prompts to try

Check where one deal stands:

@firecrawl Is the Hewlett Packard Enterprise acquisition of Juniper Networks completed? Give me the deal size, payment type and closing date.

See every deal a company is part of:

@firecrawl List every merger or acquisition involving CSCO in the past two years, whether Cisco is the acquirer or the target, with status and deal size.

Follow pending deals:

@firecrawl Show pending acquisitions expected to close this quarter, sorted by expected closing date, only the notable ones.

Get alerts when new deals are reported:

@firecrawl Monitor news about new acquisitions in the semiconductor industry every 2 hours and post new deals to my #deals Slack channel.

What it costs

Looking through Firecrawl Alexandria and reading tool prices is free, and credits are charged only when ChatGPT runs a tool. They come out of your Firecrawl account; see plans and credits.

Other sources for deal research in Firecrawl Alexandria

Benzinga's analyst ratings show how analysts moved on the acquirer or the target after a deal was announced, and its newswire carries the coverage. For a full walkthrough of the newswire, read how to get real-time stock news in ChatGPT.

For other research around a deal, the Firecrawl Alexandria catalog lists 100+ providers and what each one can do.

Coverage limits

  • Deals Benzinga tracks. The calendar covers the deals Benzinga records, so small private deals may not appear.
  • Withdrawn records. Benzinga sometimes removes a deal record it published earlier, so ask again before relying on an older answer.
  • No investment advice. ChatGPT pulls the published deal data and leaves the decision to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can ChatGPT track mergers and acquisitions?

Only partly. On its own it answers from training data and web articles written when a deal was announced, which may not be updated as the deal moves toward closing. Once the Firecrawl plugin is added, ChatGPT can look up each deal in Benzinga's M&A calendar through Firecrawl Alexandria, including its status, size, payment type and dates.

How does Firecrawl Alexandria help ChatGPT with deals?

It is the set of data providers Firecrawl gives AI agents access to, such as Benzinga's M&A calendar. Those 100-plus official sources sit alongside indexes Firecrawl builds itself, covering the web, research papers, developer material and government sites. When you ask about a deal, ChatGPT finds the right tool, checks what it returns and what it costs, and runs it.

Which SEC filings show a merger or acquisition?

A US public company reports a material definitive agreement, such as a merger agreement, on Form 8-K under Item 1.01, and the completion of an acquisition under Item 2.01. Companies generally have four business days after the event to file.

How much does it cost to track deals in ChatGPT?

There is no charge to look up tools or their prices. A Benzinga M&A calendar lookup costs 15 Firecrawl credits per call, and a Benzinga news search about a deal costs 30.

Does tracking deals in ChatGPT need a Firecrawl account?

Yes. The Firecrawl plugin connects to your Firecrawl account during setup, and the deal lookups run through that account, so connect it before asking about deals.
