How to search arXiv and PubMed in Claude

Last updated: Oct 09, 2026

Find papers that exist, read the passage that matters and check what reviewers said, without leaving the chat. Add the Firecrawl connector to Claude, and it can look up arXiv preprints and PubMed records in Firecrawl Alexandria, then pull public peer reviews from OpenReview for conferences that publish them.

Best for

  • Graduate students building a reading list where every entry has a checkable ID.
  • Health researchers screening recent PubMed reviews on a treatment or condition.
  • ML engineers checking how ICLR reviewers scored a method before adopting it.

Connector and data providers

Connector: the Firecrawl connector. PubMed, OpenReview and Firecrawl's Research Index all become reachable from a chat, and any lookup with a price is paid from the credits of the Firecrawl team that approved the connection.

Firecrawl Research IndexSearch papersRanked matches carrying a paper ID, a source ID (the arXiv ID for arXiv papers), the title and abstract. Narrow by author, a category like cs.CL, or a date window.
Firecrawl Research IndexRead paper passagesText from inside a single indexed paper that answers a question, returned with the paper's authors, arXiv categories and creation date.
PubMed and PMCSearchRecords matching a query written in PubMed syntax: title, authors, journal, publication date and types, PMID, PMCID and DOI. Supports a date range and sorting by newest.
PubMed and PMCArticleThe complete record for one PMID, including the abstract, author keywords, funding, any conflict-of-interest statement, reference count and MeSH headings after indexing.
OpenReviewSearch submissionsPapers sent to one venue (ICLR 2025, say), listing authors, the abstract, a TL;DR and an outcome label like "ICLR 2025 Poster" or "Submitted to ICLR 2025" for ones not accepted.
OpenReviewSearch repliesReviews, meta-reviews and decisions that mention your topic. Each review lists the strengths and weaknesses a reviewer saw, with rating, confidence and soundness scores.

Starter prompt

Change the topic to the field you're reviewing:

Use Firecrawl to build me a short reading list on hallucination detection
in large language models. Search arXiv via the Firecrawl Research Index,
PubMed, and OpenReview in Firecrawl Alexandria, and tell me what each tool
costs before you call it.

Return three sections:
- arXiv: five cs.CL papers from 2026 with arXiv ID, title and a one-line
  gist of the abstract.
- PubMed: three review articles from 2025 or 2026 with large language
models and hallucination in the title or abstract, newest first, with
  PMID and journal.
- ICLR 2025: submissions with "hallucination detection" in the title and
whether each was a poster, oral, rejected or withdrawn.

Include only papers the tools returned, with IDs. Leave a section short
rather than adding papers from memory.

Before you start

  • Connect Firecrawl to Claude. Open the Firecrawl connector and choose Connect. Firecrawl then loads in your browser, where you sign in or open a free account, select which team pays and approve the connection. Setup involves no API key to paste and no MCP server to configure; Firecrawl in Claude has screenshots of each step.
  • Turn it on per chat. Connectors are chat-specific, so flip Firecrawl on from Connectors in the + menu of the conversation you're using.
  • Skip the terms step. Direct API calls on Oct 9, 2026 ran all three for our account with no terms step, though another organization could still be asked for one.

Limitations of using Claude to search arXiv and PubMed

Good literature work depends on knowing a paper is real, recent and correctly described. Claude working alone can slip on every one of those.

  1. A training cutoff. Every Claude model has a stated knowledge cutoff, and Anthropic says a model may not be aware of anything published after it (Anthropic). For preprints, that gap matters: arXiv work on hallucination detection from the last few months won't be in what Claude remembers.
  2. Confident but wrong citations. Per Anthropic's support pages, Claude sometimes gets things wrong or misleads, can present quotes that seem authoritative yet have no factual basis, and its cited sources deserve a check (Anthropic). A reference list is exactly where that shows up.
  3. PubMed stores abstracts. NLM describes PubMed as more than 40 million citations and abstracts, pointing to full text elsewhere rather than hosting it (PubMed). Anthropic also notes that website links in Claude's web search may occasionally not work (Anthropic), so a methods section behind a publisher page can stay unread.
  4. Search terms get rewritten. PubMed's Automatic Term Mapping can turn plain words into MeSH concepts, and Search Details is where you see the translated query (PubMed). Asking a chatbot in plain English gives you no record of the query that was run.
  5. Preprints skip peer review. arXiv says its moderation isn't a peer-review process (arXiv). Reviews that do exist live on platforms like OpenReview, where venue organizers control who reads them and when (OpenReview).
  6. Retracted work. In PubMed, NLM marks a withdrawn paper with the Retracted Publication type and links it to its retraction notice (NLM). A paper Claude recalls from training carries none of that context.

How it works

Claude draws on four pieces for a paper question:

  • Firecrawl Alexandria: Firecrawl's route from agents to sourced data. It bundles more than 100 official providers, each licensed and paid, with indexes Firecrawl operates for the web, papers, developer docs and government records. On a benchmark of 845 tasks scored blind by an AI judge, with the model and prompts held fixed, agents using Firecrawl Alexandria beat agents on default web tools by 21% for answer quality.
  • arXiv through the Firecrawl Research Index: according to its documentation, the index holds roughly 43 million abstracts, most of them biomedical, plus arXiv for physics, maths and computer science. Searches hand back arXiv IDs, and a passage read quotes text from within the paper.
  • PubMed in its own syntax: Claude can send field-tagged queries and gets back PubMed's translation of the search plus the full hit count. A 2025 to 2026 search for review articles on GLP-1 receptor agonists returned 2,692 records when we tried it.
  • OpenReview for the decision trail: search a conference's submissions to see accepted, rejected and withdrawn papers, then search its public replies to read the reviews.

Build your own literature search workflow

Frame the request around your field. For medicine and life sciences:

Use Firecrawl to find PubMed review articles on GLP-1 receptor agonists
published from January 2025 on, newest first, with PMID, journal and date.
Open the most recent systematic review and show its abstract and its
conflict-of-interest statement.

For computer science and ML:

With Firecrawl, search the Firecrawl Research Index for cs.CL papers on
speculative decoding from 2026, then check OpenReview for speculative
decoding papers ICLR 2025 accepted as orals or posters.

Give Claude the field, the time window and the identifiers you expect, and it sends clinical questions to PubMed and preprint questions to the Research Index.

Take it further

Pull reviewer scores

Use Firecrawl to search public ICLR 2025 reviews for "speculative
cascades" and, for "Faster Cascades via Speculative Decoding", give each
reviewer's rating, confidence and biggest concern.

Find a number inside a paper

With Firecrawl, look up "Beyond Tokens: Semantic-Aware Speculative
Decoding" in the Firecrawl Research Index and quote the passages that
state its speedup.

Check for retractions

Use Firecrawl to search PubMed for retracted papers on ivermectin and
COVID-19 (publication type Retracted Publication) with PMID and journal.

Filter to one author

With Firecrawl, find 2026 arXiv papers on hallucination detection by an
author I'll name, using the Firecrawl Research Index, and list arXiv IDs.

See prices before running

Use Firecrawl to list the tools that search PubMed, arXiv or OpenReview,
with the price of each, and don't run any yet.

What it costs

Looking through the catalog and reading tool prices is free. Credits leave your team's balance only at the moment Claude runs a priced tool, and plan allowances are listed under Firecrawl pricing.

Related use cases

  • How to find papers that cite a study in Claude: trace which later work built on a paper you found here.
  • Open-access full text from PMC: given a PMCID, PubMed's full-text tool returns the body of an open-access article for 5 credits.
  • OpenReview venue details: look up the venues OpenReview hosts, such as each ICLR year, and read a venue's dates and whether its submissions are public.

Coverage limits

  • Public reviews only. OpenReview's tool finds reviews by searching a venue's public replies, not by opening one paper's thread, so match them on the paper title. Many venues besides ICLR don't publish reviews.
  • Fresh PubMed records are incomplete. One 2026 review we pulled had no MeSH headings yet because indexing happens later, and full text is only available for open-access PMC papers.
  • Research Index dates track revisions. The date filter uses a paper's created or updated date, so a revised older preprint can land in a recent range. An empty passage read doesn't prove the paper is silent on your question.
