How to use ChatGPT to look up salaries by job title and city

Last updated: Oct 20, 2026

Find out what a data analyst in Chicago or a registered nurse in Denver usually earns, see how wide the spread is from the bottom tenth to the top, and hold that up against what local listings advertise. With the Firecrawl plugin you can look up salaries by job title and city in ChatGPT through Firecrawl Alexandria, which reads the pay estimates ZipRecruiter publishes for US cities.

Best for

  • Knowing the going rate for your role before a recruiter asks for your salary expectations.
  • Running a salary comparison by city before you accept a relocation or a remote offer tied to one metro.
  • Sizing the range for a role you're about to post, with the local spread in front of you.

Plugins and data providers

Plugin: the Firecrawl plugin. Through it ChatGPT reaches the tools in Firecrawl Alexandria, and a successful ZipRecruiter lookup takes 5 credits from your Firecrawl balance, whatever the city.

ZipRecruiterSalaryZipRecruiter's annual base salary estimate for a title in a US city, or for the whole country: the 10th, 25th, median, 75th and 90th percentiles in US dollars, with the page they came from. It is a pay benchmark, not what one employer offers.

Starter prompt

Edit the title and city before sending:

@firecrawl Look up ZipRecruiter's salary estimate for a data analyst in
Chicago, IL through Firecrawl Alexandria, then get the national estimate
for the same title. Tell me the price of each call before you run it.

Lay it out like this:
- The 10th, 25th, median, 75th and 90th percentile annual pay in Chicago.
- The same five figures for the US overall, and how far Chicago's median
sits above or below the national one.
- A link to the ZipRecruiter page behind each estimate.

Present these as a benchmark, not a job offer, and don't round the figures.

Before you start

  • Get the plugin into ChatGPT. The button below opens its listing in the plugin directory.
  • Connect a Firecrawl account. Every ZipRecruiter call is billed there, and anyone without an account can open one for free.
  • Budget a few credits. Each ZipRecruiter call that returns data costs 5 Firecrawl credits, and the starter prompt makes two of them.

How ChatGPT reads ZipRecruiter salary estimates with Firecrawl

A ChatGPT salary lookup through Firecrawl comes down to four parts:

  • Firecrawl Alexandria: the catalog of agent-ready data Firecrawl maintains, with 100+ official providers covered by paid agreements plus four indexes Firecrawl runs itself (web, Research, Developer and Government). In Firecrawl's evals, 845 tasks were run with an identical model and prompts, and agents using Firecrawl Alexandria earned 21% higher answer-quality scores than agents limited to the web tools built into the assistant.
  • The salary benchmark: ZipRecruiter's Salary tool takes a job title and a city written as "City, ST", or no city for the national figure, and returns five percentiles of annual base pay along with the page it read. ZipRecruiter says it builds these estimates by scanning the active job listings in its database.
  • The listings: Search jobs brings back the pay each card advertises, so ChatGPT can put real postings next to the estimate while keeping the two apart.
  • Price first, read only: ChatGPT can see what a tool costs before running it, for free, and the plugin only reads data, so it can't apply for a job or contact an employer.

Build your own salary lookup workflow

Start from the choice you're actually facing. For someone negotiating an offer:

@firecrawl I've been offered $85,000 as a registered nurse in Denver, CO.
Get ZipRecruiter's salary estimate for that title and city and tell me
which percentile band the offer falls into. Show the price first.

For someone deciding between two cities:

@firecrawl Compare ZipRecruiter's salary estimates for a data analyst in
Chicago, IL and Austin, TX. Put the five percentiles side by side and give
the gap at the median in dollars and as a percentage.

Naming the exact title, writing the city as "City, ST" and saying what you'll use the answer for lets ChatGPT choose the right calls and frame the numbers around your decision.

Take it further

Hold the estimate up against live postings

@firecrawl Get ZipRecruiter's salary estimate for a registered nurse in
Denver, CO, then search ZipRecruiter jobs for the same title and city.
List the cards with stated pay and their annualized range, and mark the
ones above the estimate's median.

See the national picture

@firecrawl What is ZipRecruiter's national salary estimate for a software
engineer? Give me all five percentiles and the source page.

Ask what each tool costs first

@firecrawl Which tools can tell me what a job title pays in a US city? List
each one with its price per call.

What it costs

You pay nothing while ChatGPT browses tools, reads their fields or asks about prices. Credits are spent only at the moment it runs a ZipRecruiter tool, and the allowance on each plan is listed on Firecrawl pricing.

ZipRecruiter toolWhat it answersCredits per call
SalaryWhat a title pays in one US city or nationwide, by percentile5
Search jobsWhat current listings for a title and city advertise5

The starter prompt runs Salary twice, so it costs 10 credits. Checking the estimate against postings also costs 10, one Salary call plus one Search jobs call. Each reply notes which ZipRecruiter tool ran and what that call cost you.

  • BLS labor statistics: Bureau of Labor Statistics wage and employment series, including QCEW wages by county, metro area and industry, for a government view next to salary by city.
  • Greenhouse job boards: one employer's openings, with the pay ranges written into each post.

Coverage limits

  • US cities and national figures. The Salary tool covers US cities written as "City, ST", plus a national estimate. A title ZipRecruiter has no salary page for comes back as not found, and in our test that call wasn't charged.
  • Gross base pay, by percentile. The estimates are annual base salary before tax, so take-home pay still needs a separate salary calculator by job title and state. Percentiles aren't experience levels, and ZipRecruiter's own page calls the midpoint figure the average annual pay while the tool labels it the median.
  • Listings move around. Search jobs returns 20 cards a page with sponsored placements mixed in, and some cards carry posting dates more than a year old, so check the date on each one.
