How to find someone's work email in ChatGPT

A work email is a small fact that has to be exactly right, and ChatGPT is built to produce likely text rather than look up records, which causes five problems.

1. A guess that looks like an answer. Language models tend to guess when they're uncertain and give confident wrong answers instead of admitting they don't know, and OpenAI notes ChatGPT still does this. A name plus a domain is an easy prompt to fill with first.last@company, whether or not that mailbox exists.
2. It may decline outright. OpenAI trains its models to avoid responding to requests for private or sensitive information about individuals, and it leaves known personal-data aggregators out of training (OpenAI). So the model often has no contact data to draw on in the first place.
3. Old pages, old jobs. The address search finds may sit on a page written before the person changed employers, and some pages are closed to ChatGPT by paywalls, technical problems or robots.txt rules (OpenAI).
4. Checking by hand isn't reliable. Probing a mail server to see if an address exists, the so-called broken SMTP handshake, is not a reliable or safe-sending practice according to Twilio SendGrid, partly because some servers only check the recipient after accepting the message.
5. A named work address carries rules too. In the UK you can email corporate bodies under different rules from individuals, but the ICO says you may still need to consider data protection when writing to employees at addresses like firstname.lastname@company (ICO). ChatGPT won't flag that for you.

A work email lookup in ChatGPT comes down to a few pieces:
