How to check a company's BBB complaints in ChatGPT

Last updated: Oct 09, 2026

Before you hire a contractor or sign a service contract, read what customers have told BBB about the company and how it answered. With the Firecrawl plugin, ChatGPT can check BBB complaints through Firecrawl Alexandria, reading the business's live profile and complaint history on bbb.org.

Best for

  • Vetting a roofer, mover or other local business before you pay a deposit.
  • Seeing what people complain about most at a big company, such as billing or service outages, and whether the company replies.
  • Confirming whether a business is BBB accredited and what BBB says drove its grade.

Plugins and data providers

Plugin: the Firecrawl plugin. Gives ChatGPT a way to find and run BBB tools in Firecrawl Alexandria. Every lookup draws on your Firecrawl credits.

Starter prompt

Swap in the company you're checking and the city where it operates:

@firecrawl Check Comcast's BBB record using the BBB business profiles tools
in Firecrawl Alexandria. Find the right profile first, then read it. Tell me
what each tool costs before you run it.

Give me a short update:
- The BBB letter grade, the reasons BBB lists, and whether it's accredited.
- Complaints closed in the past 12 months and past 3 years.
- How complaints break down by type and by status.
- The five newest billing complaints, each summarized in one line, and
  whether the company replied.
- The bbb.org profile link.

Report what BBB shows. Don't call any complaint proven, and say so if the
name you found doesn't clearly match the company I asked about.

Before you start

  • Get the plugin. Its ChatGPT listing opens from the button under these steps.
  • Connect a Firecrawl account. Lookups are paid from its credits; create one here if you don't have it yet.
  • Know where the business is. A city, ZIP code or the bbb.org profile link helps, because BBB's name search matches loosely.

Limitations of using ChatGPT to check BBB complaints

A BBB profile is a moving record kept by a private nonprofit, which is easy for a chatbot to misread in six ways.

  1. The grade can be out of date or invented. A model's answers don't include anything after its training cutoff unless it uses tools, and it can sound sure of a wrong answer or cite sources that don't exist (OpenAI). BBB says its ratings update automatically as new information arrives (BBB), so a grade remembered from last year may no longer be the one on the profile.
  2. It's a private grade. BBB calls itself a nonprofit that sits outside government and holds no regulatory power (BBB). A summary that calls the grade an official rating overstates it.
  3. The grade isn't a complaint count. BBB scores complaint volume weighted by age, unanswered and unresolved complaints, time in business, licensing and other factors, and lists the size of the business among the complaint factors (BBB). When we called BBB business profiles directly on Oct 9, 2026, Comcast held an A+ with more than 26,000 complaints closed in three years.
  4. Accreditation and rating get mixed up. BBB says accreditation is voluntary and separate from the rating, and that dues don't buy a rating or remove a complaint (BBB). A business can be unaccredited and still graded well.
  5. A complaint isn't a verdict. BBB closes complaints as resolved, answered, unresolved, unanswered or unpursuable, and "answered" means the business replied but the customer didn't accept it or didn't confirm (BBB). BBB also says it doesn't take sides and can't force a business to act (BBB).
  6. The record has a window. Complaints show on a profile for three years from filing, and for a business with a high volume BBB may publish text for only a representative sample (BBB). A quick read of the first page can miss most of the story.

How it works

Three parts do the work when ChatGPT checks a BBB record:

  • Firecrawl Alexandria: where ChatGPT turns for data it can't recall. Licensed sources (100+ official providers, each compensated by contract) are listed together with Firecrawl's four indexes, covering the open web, scholarly research, code and docs, and government material, plus readers for public sites like BBB business profiles. Firecrawl's evals ran 845 tasks with matched models and prompts, and answers from agents equipped with it rated 21% higher in quality than answers built from standard web tools.
  • The BBB tools: search finds the profile, the profile tool returns the grade, reasons and complaint totals, and the complaint tool reads the published complaints with BBB's own type and status labels. Each call reads bbb.org when you ask, so figures match the site that day.
  • Read-only, priced up front: ChatGPT can show the credit cost before it runs anything, and the tools only read public BBB pages. Nothing gets filed or posted.

Build your own BBB complaint check

Shape the prompt around what you're about to do. Use this if you're hiring a local business:

@firecrawl Search BBB for moving companies near Miami, FL. For the three
that look like full-service local movers, give me the letter grade, the
reasons BBB lists, accreditation, years in business and complaints closed in
the past 3 years. For any graded below B, show its unanswered complaints.

Use this if you're comparing service providers before you switch:

@firecrawl Compare these two BBB profiles. For each, show the grade,
accreditation, complaints closed in the past 12 months, and the split
between answered and resolved complaints. Then summarize the three newest
service or repair complaints for each.
<paste the first bbb.org profile link>
<paste the second bbb.org profile link>

Both work because they say where the business is, which figures matter and what to do with a low grade, so ChatGPT picks the right BBB tool at each step.

Take it further

Only the complaints nobody answered

@firecrawl Find this business on BBB and list its unanswered complaints,
newest first, with the date and a one-line summary of each:
<paste the bbb.org profile link>

What a company says back

@firecrawl Show Comcast's five newest BBB billing complaints and quote the
company's reply to each, as published.

Reviews next to complaints

@firecrawl Pull the first page of BBB customer reviews for Comcast with star
ratings, and tell me whether they raise the same issues as its complaints.

Prices before anything runs

What it costs

Searching for a BBB tool and reading its price won't touch your balance. Credits leave your Firecrawl account only once a tool actually runs, and the Firecrawl pricing page lists what each plan includes.

Coverage limits

  • US and Canada only. The tools search and read bbb.org profiles in those two countries, and a business BBB has no file on won't appear.
  • Loose name matching. When we searched the API directly on Oct 9, 2026, a nationwide query for "Comcast" returned unrelated businesses, while "Comcast Cable Communications" found the right profile. Add a city or paste the bbb.org link, and check the returned name.
  • Large records get capped. The overall complaint total the tools return stops at 10,000, and BBB may publish text for only a sample of a big company's complaints, so the 12-month and 3-year closed counts are the figures to compare.
