Check which homes for sale are in a flood zone
Here's how to check if a house is in a flood zone with ChatGPT or Claude: homes for sale under your budget, checked on FEMA flood maps before you fall for one.

What came back
Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) sent back, word for word:
Of the 41 three-bedroom Houston listings I found under $450K, 7 are in a FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area (Zone AE, the 1% annual-chance flood zone). Lenders usually require flood insurance for homes in these areas. Three more are in the moderate-risk zone (shaded Zone X).

How I did it:
- Listings: These come from the Zillow provider in Firecrawl Alexandria. Its search can't filter by price or bedrooms, so I pulled the first 3 result pages for Houston and filtered them myself. This is a sample of the market, not every matching listing. One result is in Humble and one in Pearland, both suburbs inside Zillow's Houston search area.
- Flood zones: Alexandria has no FEMA flood provider. FEMA's own map server refused the connection, so I used Esri's hosted copy of FEMA's National Flood Hazard Layer, fetched with Firecrawl's URL scrape.
- Accuracy: Each check uses the point where the listing sits on the map, not the property boundary. A home close to a zone edge could be classified differently. Before you buy, confirm with an official FEMA map extract (FIRMette) from msc.fema.gov or an elevation certificate. Plenty of Houston homes outside mapped zones have flooded, as in Harvey, so it's also worth asking about flood history.
Firecrawl's rate limit of about 12 requests a minute slowed the flood lookups a lot, so going further (more result pages or a bigger area) will take a while.
