- [OpenAPI spec](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/nature-com/openapi.json)

## Capabilities

- [Get article](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/nature-com/papers/get_article): Article record from the article page (`GET /articles/{article_id}`): identifiers, title, journal, volume/issue/pages, dates, authors with affiliations and ORCID, abstract, subjects, license, access state (open or subscription), reference list with DOIs, figure captions and image URLs, supplementary files and the PDF URL. Full text is served by `get_article_text`. An unknown id is `not_found`.
- [Get article references](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/nature-com/papers/get_article_references): Reference list of an article as structured records from Springer Nature's RIS export (`citation-needed.springer.com/v2/references/{doi}?format=refman&flavour=references`): type, authors, year, title, journal, volume, DOI and URL per reference; unstructured references keep their raw text.
- [Get article text](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/nature-com/papers/get_article_text): Body text of an article (`GET /articles/{article_id}`) as ordered sections (Abstract, Introduction, Results, Methods, ... including sub-headings, with citation markers rendered as `[n]`), for open-access articles. For subscription articles only the freely visible sections (abstract) are returned, with `access: subscription`, a `paywalled` warning and partial coverage; the paywalled body is not available to this program. `max_chars` truncates the returned text for a preview.
- [Get issue](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/nature-com/papers/get_issue): Table of contents of one journal issue (`GET /{journal}/volumes/{volume}/issues/{issue}`): every article card grouped by section (This Week, News in Focus, Research, ...) and sub-section (Editorial, Article, Letter, ...), optionally filtered to one section.
- [Latest by subject](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/nature-com/papers/latest_by_subject): Newest articles across Nature journals tagged with a subject, from the subject RSS feed (`GET /subjects/{slug}.rss`, RSS 2.0, about 30 items, cached 10 minutes by the site). An unknown slug is `not_found`.
- [List journal articles](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/nature-com/papers/list_journal_articles): Articles of one journal, newest first, 20 cards per page: `GET /{journal}/research-articles?searchType=journalSearch&sort=PubDate&page={page}` by default, or `GET /{journal}/articles?type={type}&year={year}&page={page}` when a type or year filter is given.
- [List sitemap articles](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/nature-com/papers/list_sitemap_articles): Every article URL a journal published in one month, from the per-journal monthly sitemap (`GET /{journal}/sitemap/{yyyy}/{m}/articles.xml`), paged with `offset`/`limit`. Cheap bulk enumeration without search; a journal/month with no sitemap is `not_found`.
- [Search articles](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/nature-com/papers/search_articles): Keyword and fielded search over every nature.com journal (`GET /search`): 50 result cards per page with the total hit count, filterable by journal, subject, article type, date range, author and title, sorted by relevance or date. The site fronts /search with a Fastly client challenge after a burst of requests from one IP; that page is returned as an `upstream_blocked` failure, never as an empty result.

## 1. Choose this provider when

Nature and the Nature Portfolio journals on nature.com: article search with filters, article metadata and open-access full text, structured reference lists (Springer Nature RIS export), per-journal listings and issue tables of contents, subject RSS feeds and monthly article sitemaps. Anonymous server-rendered HTML/XML; subscription full text is not available.

## 2. Minimal request

Call `POST https://api.firecrawl.dev/v2/scrape` with `{ alexandria: { provider, capability, options } }`. For a batch, send `{ alexandria: [...] }` with up to 10 calls.

```json
  "provider": "nature-com",
  "capability": "papers/get_article",
  "options": {
    "article_id": "s41467-026-73263-1"
  }
}
```

## 3. Add provider options

Use only the options needed for the task:

- `article_id` (string): Article identifier: the path segment of https://www.nature.com/articles/{article_id} (e.g. `s41467-026-73263-1`, `d41586-026-03000-7`, `nature12373`). Example: `s41467-026-73263-1`
- `doi` (string): Nature DOI, `10.1038/{article_id}`, with or without a `doi:` / `https://doi.org/` prefix. Example: `10.1038/{article_id}`
- `url` (string): A pasted https://www.nature.com/articles/{article_id} URL instead of `article_id`/`doi`. Example: `article_id`

## 6. Response data

The response includes `success`, `provider`, `capability`, `creditsCost` and `data`. This example shows the provider payload in `data`:

```json
{
  "abstract": "The neural encoding of the animal’s position is essential for spatial navigation and cognition, yet the three-dimensional (3D) positioning system in the primate brain remains poorly understood. By combining wireless multi-channel recordings from common marmosets with a free-forging task in the 3D space, we identified 42% and 24% neurons in the frontal cortex (FC) and hippocampus (HPC) as place cells, respectively. Place cells in FC and HPC encoded the 3D position with similar spatial information, sparsity and stability, and exhibited stronger functional connections than non-place cells. Notably, their place fields were preferentially distributed in the center and border of the 3D space, and were recapitulated by an RNN-AutoEncoder model simulating the FC-HPC network. Collectively, these findings support a hypothesis that a widely distributed neural network involving frontal cortex and hippocampus constitutes a 3D positioning system in primates possibly by local recurrent circuits and long-range connections.",
  "abstract": "The neural encoding of the animal’s position is essential for spatial navigation and cognition, yet the three-dimensional (3D) positioning system in the primate brain remains poorly understood. By combining wireless multi-channel recordings from common marmosets with a free-forging task in the 3D space, we identified 42% and 24% neurons in the frontal cortex (FC) and hippocampus (HPC) as place cells, respectively. Place cells in FC and HPC encoded the 3D position with similar spatial information, sparsity and stability, and exhibited stronger functional connections than non-place cells. Notably, their place fields were preferentially distributed in the center and border of the 3D space, and were recapitulated by an RNN-AutoEncoder model simulating the FC-HPC network. Collectively, these findings support a hypothesis that a widely distributed neural network involving frontal cortex and hippocampus constitutes a 3D positioning system in primates possibly by local recurrent circuits and long-range connections.",
### Get article references
- Capability: `papers/get_article_references`
- Description: Reference list of an article as structured records from Springer Nature's RIS export (`citation-needed.springer.com/v2/references/{doi}?format=refman&flavour=references`): type, authors, year, title, journal, volume, DOI and URL per reference; unstructured references keep their raw text.
- Instructions: Get a machine-readable bibliography for an article found with `get_article` or a listing; complements the numbered `references` of `get_article`.
- Cost: 5 credits per call
- Capability file: [Get article references](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/nature-com/papers/get_article_references)
Accepted options:
- `article_id` (string): Article identifier: the path segment of https://www.nature.com/articles/{article_id} (e.g. `s41467-026-73263-1`, `d41586-026-03000-7`, `nature12373`). Example: `s41467-026-73263-1`
- `doi` (string): Nature DOI, `10.1038/{article_id}`, with or without a `doi:` / `https://doi.org/` prefix. Example: `10.1038/{article_id}`
- `url` (string): A pasted https://www.nature.com/articles/{article_id} URL instead of `article_id`/`doi`. Example: `article_id`
### Get article text
- Capability: `papers/get_article_text`
- Description: Body text of an article (`GET /articles/{article_id}`) as ordered sections (Abstract, Introduction, Results, Methods, ... including sub-headings, with citation markers rendered as `[n]`), for open-access articles. For subscription articles only the freely visible sections (abstract) are returned, with `access: subscription`, a `paywalled` warning and partial coverage; the paywalled body is not available to this program. `max_chars` truncates the returned text for a preview.
- Instructions: Retrieve the full paper text of an open-access Nature-journal article for reading or verification. Call `get_article` first when unsure whether the article is open access.
- Cost: 5 credits per call
- Capability file: [Get article text](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/nature-com/papers/get_article_text)
Accepted options:
- `article_id` (string): Article identifier: the path segment of https://www.nature.com/articles/{article_id} (e.g. `s41467-026-73263-1`, `d41586-026-03000-7`, `nature12373`). Example: `s41467-026-73263-1`
- `doi` (string): Nature DOI, `10.1038/{article_id}`, with or without a `doi:` / `https://doi.org/` prefix. Example: `10.1038/{article_id}`
- `max_chars` (number): Stop after this many characters of section text (the last section is cut); omit for the whole body. Example: `200`
- `url` (string): A pasted https://www.nature.com/articles/{article_id} URL instead of `article_id`/`doi`. Example: `article_id`
      "text": "The neural encoding of the animal’s position is essential for spatial navigation and cognition, yet the three-dimensional (3D) positioning system in the primate brain remains poorly understood. By combining wireless multi-channel recordings from common marmosets with a free-forging task in the 3D space, we identified 42% and 24% neurons in the frontal cortex (FC) and hippocampus (HPC) as place cells, respectively. Place cells in FC and HPC encoded the 3D position with similar spatial information, sparsity and stability, and exhibited stronger functional connections than non-place cells. Notably, their place fields were preferentially distributed in the center and border of the 3D space, and were recapitulated by an RNN-AutoEncoder model simulating the FC-HPC network. Collectively, these findings support a hypothesis that a widely distributed neural network involving frontal cortex and hippocampus constitutes a 3D positioning system in primates possibly by local recurrent circuits and long-range connections.",
      "text": "The spatial cognition empowers animal survival by enabling animals to recognize and memorize one’s own position and navigate in a physical space. The cognitive map of the environment in the brain supports the spatial memory and navigation by various function cells including place, head direction, grid and border cells, which are extensively studied in the rodent hippocampal formation[1,2,3,4,5] and have been recently characterized in the primate hippocampus[6,7,8]. Most studies on spatial cognition used rodents and focused on the 2D space. However, many species such as primates, live and locomote in a 3D volumetric world. It is a long-standing question whether a similar positioning system for 3D space exist in the primate brain, particularly the primate hippocampus.\n\nPioneering studies have begun to identify place cells (PCs) encoding 3D positions in the hippocampus of bats[9] and rats[10]. Although primate hippocampal cells have been found to encode the 1D/2D position[6,7], the existence and functional relevance of PCs encoding 3D positions have been challenged by recent studies revealing a predominance of view cells over place cells[7,8,11]. In the 3D space, the encoding features of PCs in rats and bats may be modulated either similarly or differently by the gravity, locomotion patterns and experiences[9,10,12,13,14,15,16,17]. For instance, the geometry of PC’s place fields is elongated in rats but not in bats[9,10]. It remains elusive how the 3D positioning system operates in the primate hippocampus including the potential modulation by gravity and locomotion patterns such as climbing and walking.\n\nAccumulating evidence suggests that PCs exist outside the hippocampus such as the orbitofrontal cortex[18], piriform cortex[19] and the somatosensory cortex in rodents[20]. Furthermore, PCs were identified in frontal cortex including prefrontal and premotor areas in both macaques[21] and humans[22,23]. Thus, the widely distributed navigational cells in the network of frontal cortex and hippocampus may underscore their critical roles in free-foraging behaviors and goal-directed behaviors[23,24,25,26,27,28]. Yet, it remains unclear how the 3D positioning system is organized in the primate brain, particularly in the frontal-hippocampal network[29].\n\nIn this study, we have setup a wireless multi-channel recording system in freely moving marmosets, and tested the hypothesis that the 3D space is widely represented in a distributed network of frontal areas and hippocampus in primates[29]. When marmosets engaged in a 3D-space free-foraging task, we recorded neuronal activities in the hippocampus and frontal areas including prefrontal and premotor areas. We identified PCs encoding 3D positions in both hippocampus and frontal cortex, which encompassed 42% and 24% neurons in these brain areas, respectively. PCs in these two areas shared similar properties such as spatial information, sparsity, and stability. Their place fields were rarely",
### List journal articles
- Capability: `papers/list_journal_articles`
- Description: Articles of one journal, newest first, 20 cards per page: `GET /{journal}/research-articles?searchType=journalSearch&sort=PubDate&page={page}` by default, or `GET /{journal}/articles?type={type}&year={year}&page={page}` when a type or year filter is given.
- Instructions: Browse the latest research of a specific journal (`nature`, `ncomms`, `srep`, ...) or a year/type slice of it, without hitting the challenge-protected /search. Pass `page` to continue.
- Cost: 5 credits per call
- Capability file: [List journal articles](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/nature-com/papers/list_journal_articles)
Accepted options:
- `journal` (string, required): Journal path code (pcode) as used in nature.com URLs: `nature`, `ncomms`, `srep`, `neuro`, `nrn`, `nbt`, ... Pattern: ^[a-z][a-z0-9-]{1,40}$. Example: `<journal>`
- `page` (number): 1-based page of 20 cards; default 1. Example: `10`
- `type` (string): Article type slug for the /articles listing, e.g. `article`, `letter`, `review-article`, `news`, `editorial`. Pattern: ^[a-z][a-z0-9-]{1,40}$. Example: `<type>`
- `year` (number): Publication year filter for the /articles listing. Example: `1869`
### List sitemap articles
- Capability: `papers/list_sitemap_articles`
- Description: Every article URL a journal published in one month, from the per-journal monthly sitemap (`GET /{journal}/sitemap/{yyyy}/{m}/articles.xml`), paged with `offset`/`limit`. Cheap bulk enumeration without search; a journal/month with no sitemap is `not_found`.
- Instructions: Enumerate all article ids of a journal for a month, e.g. to feed `get_article` / `get_article_text`.
- Cost: 5 credits per call
- Capability file: [List sitemap articles](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/nature-com/papers/list_sitemap_articles)
Accepted options:
- `journal` (string, required): Journal path code (pcode) as used in nature.com URLs: `nature`, `ncomms`, `srep`, `neuro`, `nrn`, `nbt`, ... Pattern: ^[a-z][a-z0-9-]{1,40}$. Example: `<journal>`
- `limit` (number): URLs to return; default 200. Example: `10`
- `month` (number, required): month Example: `10`
- `offset` (number): Skip this many URLs; default 0. Example: `10`
- `year` (number, required): year Example: `1869`
### Search articles
- Capability: `papers/search_articles`
- Description: Keyword and fielded search over every nature.com journal (`GET /search`): 50 result cards per page with the total hit count, filterable by journal, subject, article type, date range, author and title, sorted by relevance or date. The site fronts /search with a Fastly client challenge after a burst of requests from one IP; that page is returned as an `upstream_blocked` failure, never as an empty result.
- Instructions: Find articles by topic, author or title across Nature journals. For browsing one journal or subject without a query prefer `list_journal_articles`, `get_issue` or `latest_by_subject` (no challenge on those surfaces). Pass `page` to continue.
- Cost: 5 credits per call
- Capability file: [Search articles](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/nature-com/papers/search_articles)
Accepted options:
- `article_type` (string): Article type facet. Example: `research`
- `author` (string): Author surname or full name. Example: `<author>`
- `date_range` (string): `today`, `last_7_days`, `last_30_days`, `last_year`, `last_2_years`, `last_5_years` or an inclusive year range `YYYY-YYYY`. Pattern: ^(today|last_7_days|last_30_days|last_year|last_2_years|last_5_years|[12][0-9]{3}-[12][0-9]{3})$. Example: `<date_range>`
- `journal` (string): Journal path code (pcode) as used in nature.com URLs: `nature`, `ncomms`, `srep`, `neuro`, `nrn`, `nbt`, ... Pattern: ^[a-z][a-z0-9-]{1,40}$. Example: `<journal>`
- `order` (string): Sort order; default `relevance`. Example: `relevance`
- `page` (number): 1-based page of 50 results; default 1. Example: `10`
- `q` (string): Free-text query (title, abstract and full text). Example: `<q>`
- `subject` (string): Subject slug as used in /subjects/{slug}, e.g. `hippocampus`, `neuroscience`. Pattern: ^[a-z0-9][a-z0-9-]{1,80}$. Example: `<subject>`
- `title` (string): Words that must appear in the title. Example: `<title>`
      "description": "Grid cells are cells of the brain’s internal map of space that fire when an animal is in a location corresponding to the vertices of a hexagonal grid pattern tiling the entire environment; how the pattern is mapped onto the external environment has remained a mystery, however, new studies in rat reveal that the axes of the grid are determined by the boundaries of the external environment and provide insight into the rotation of the grid axis in relation to these boundaries.",
