# HGNC (HUGO Gene Nomenclature Committee) on Firecrawl Alexandria

HGNC, the authority for human gene names, through the genenames.org REST API: resolve any gene symbol, alias, previous symbol or ID (HGNC, NCBI Gene, Ensembl, UniProt, RefSeq, MGI, RGD) to the current approved symbol, with ambiguous aliases listed rather than guessed; check up to 50 genes at once; and search genes by name, symbol pattern, cytoband or locus type. Records carry the approved name, aliases, previous symbols, locus type, location, gene groups and cross-references that join NCBI Gene, Ensembl, UniProt, OMIM and PubMed. HGNC data is CC0.

## Capabilities

- [Get](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/genenames-org/genes/get): One human gene's approved HGNC record, from whatever you have: a symbol, alias or previous symbol, an HGNC, NCBI Gene, Ensembl, UniProt, RefSeq, MGI or RGD ID, or a genenames.org URL. Says how the input matched, and returns the approved symbol and name, aliases, previous symbols, locus type, location, gene groups and cross-references (NCBI Gene, Ensembl, UniProt, OMIM, RefSeq, MANE Select, CCDS, MGI, RGD, Orphanet, PubMed). An alias shared by several genes is an `ambiguous` result listing every candidate, and a withdrawn HGNC ID that was merged resolves to the gene it went into. Unknown genes are `not_found`.
- [Resolve](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/genenames-org/genes/resolve): Check up to 50 human gene symbols or IDs in one call, like HGNC's multi-symbol checker. Each input comes back `resolved` to its approved symbol (saying whether it matched an approved symbol, previous symbol, alias or ID), `ambiguous` with every candidate, `withdrawn`, or `not_found`, in input order. When none matches, the result is `not_found`.
- [Search](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/genenames-org/genes/search): Search HGNC's human genes by free text, where every word must match a symbol, alias, name or other field (`kinase`, `17p13.1`, `zinc finger`), or by HGNC field syntax (`symbol:ZNF*`, `name:"potassium channel" AND locus_type:"gene with protein product"`). Filters for locus group and status; approved genes only by default. An exact symbol, previous-symbol or alias match ranks first. Each result has the HGNC ID, approved symbol and name, locus group and type, location, aliases, previous symbols, and NCBI Gene, Ensembl and UniProt IDs. Offset-paginated; an empty result is a valid empty page.

## 1. Choose this provider when

## 2. Minimal request

Call `POST https://api.firecrawl.dev/v2/scrape` with `{ alexandria: { provider, capability, options } }`. For a batch, send `{ alexandria: [...] }` with up to 10 calls.

```json
{
  "provider": "genenames-org",
  "capability": "genes/get",
  "options": {
    "gene": "p53"
  }
}
```

## 3. Add provider options

Use only the options needed for the task:

- `gene` (string): A human gene symbol, alias or previous symbol (`TP53`, `p53`, `HER2`, `SEPT7`; case-insensitive), an HGNC ID (`HGNC:11998`), NCBI Gene ID (`7157`), Ensembl gene ID (`ENSG00000141510`), UniProt accession (`P04637`), RefSeq transcript (`NM_000546.6`), or the MGI or RGD ID of a mouse or rat ortholog. Example: `TP53`
- `url` (string): A genenames.org symbol report URL, e.g. `https://www.genenames.org/data/gene-symbol-report/#!/hgnc_id/HGNC:11998`. Exactly one of `gene` and `url`. Example: `https://www.genenames.org/data/gene-symbol-report/#!/hgnc_id/HGNC:11998`

## API reference-derived contract

The following capability contract is generated from the same normalized Alexandria API reference exposed in the API spec.

### Get

- Capability: `genes/get`
- Description: One human gene's approved HGNC record, from whatever you have: a symbol, alias or previous symbol, an HGNC, NCBI Gene, Ensembl, UniProt, RefSeq, MGI or RGD ID, or a genenames.org URL.
- Instructions: When you have one gene name or ID from a paper, dataset or user and need the official human symbol and the gene's IDs in other databases. For many genes at once use `resolve`; for genes you can only describe use `search`.
- Cost: 5 credits per call
- Capability file: [Get](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/genenames-org/genes/get)

Accepted options:
- `gene` (string): A human gene symbol, alias or previous symbol (`TP53`, `p53`, `HER2`, `SEPT7`; case-insensitive), an HGNC ID (`HGNC:11998`), NCBI Gene ID (`7157`), Ensembl gene ID (`ENSG00000141510`), UniProt accession (`P04637`), RefSeq transcript (`NM_000546.6`), or the MGI or RGD ID of a mouse or rat ortholog. Example: `TP53`
- `url` (string): A genenames.org symbol report URL, e.g. `https://www.genenames.org/data/gene-symbol-report/#!/hgnc_id/HGNC:11998`. Exactly one of `gene` and `url`. Example: `https://www.genenames.org/data/gene-symbol-report/#!/hgnc_id/HGNC:11998`

### Resolve

- Capability: `genes/resolve`
- Description: Check up to 50 human gene symbols or IDs in one call, like HGNC's multi-symbol checker. Each input comes back `resolved` to its approved symbol (saying whether it matched an approved symbol, previous symbol, alias or ID), `ambiguous` with every candidate, `withdrawn`, or `not_found`, in input order. When none matches, the result is `not_found`.
- Instructions: To normalize a gene list from a paper, spreadsheet or vendor page to current approved symbols and HGNC, NCBI Gene, Ensembl and UniProt IDs before joining it to other data.
- Cost: 5 credits per call
- Capability file: [Resolve](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/genenames-org/genes/resolve)

Accepted options:
- `genes` (string[], required): 1 to 50 genes; repeats are checked once. Example: `[]`

### Search

- Capability: `genes/search`
- Description: Search HGNC's human genes by free text, where every word must match a symbol, alias, name or other field (`kinase`, `17p13.1`, `zinc finger`), or by HGNC field syntax (`symbol:ZNF*`, `name:"potassium channel" AND locus_type:"gene with protein product"`).
- Instructions: To find genes you can describe but not name exactly: a gene family, a cytoband, a symbol prefix or a word in the gene name. Then call `get` for one gene's full record.
- Cost: 5 credits per call
- Capability file: [Search](https://firecrawl.dev/alexandria/agents/providers/genenames-org/genes/search)

Accepted options:
- `limit` (number): Results per page. Example: `10`
- `locus_group` (string): Only genes in this locus group. Example: `protein-coding gene`
- `offset` (number): Zero-based index of the first result. Example: `0`
- `query` (string, required): Free text (all words must match) or HGNC field syntax with fields such as `symbol`, `alias_symbol`, `prev_symbol`, `name`, `locus_type`, `locus_group`; a trailing `*` matches a prefix (`ZNF*`). Example: `<query>`
- `status` (string): `approved` (default), `withdrawn` entries only, or `any`. Example: `approved`

Response schema example:
